RENO, NV: Jill Derby, candidate for Nevada's Second Congressional District, has signed onto The Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq, a comprehensive strategy to end the war.
Derby was one of the first to sign on to the plan, which has been reviewed and endorsed by leading national security experts. The 36-page document provides a detailed framework to end the War in Iraq, stabilize the region, restore America's moral standing in the world, and fulfill promises made to our servicemen and women. Signers pledge to support more than a dozen pieces of legislation to accomplish these goals.
"We owe our veterans and their families a comprehensive solution to end the War in Iraq, restore our military, and build the foundation for a lasting peace," Derby said. "In the Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq, we finally have our answer-and the voices to make it heard."
The Responsible Plan has several key goals: end U.S. military action in Iraq, use U.S. diplomatic power to create stability, address the humanitarian issues of displaced Iraqis, restore the checks and balances that are the framework of integrity for our Constitution, live up to the promises made to our military, and create a U.S.-centered energy policy. The Responsible Plan has been endorsed by a number of high-ranking former military officials and national security experts, including Lawrence Korb, former assistant secretary of defense under President Reagan, and Rand Beers, a counterterrorism expert who served on the National Security Council under Presidents Reagan, Clinton and both Bushes. More than 40 congressional candidates from across the country have signed onto the plan.
"This war has taken an incredible toll on our military, budget, and economy over the past five years. We need a real change in approach," Derby said. "In talking with voters across Nevada's Second District, there is a clear demand for leadership and a cohesive strategy to end the war and protect America's interests. Nevadans are tired of Dean Heller walking in lockstep with the Bush Administration on what has proven to be a failed strategy for Iraq."
Derby, a fourth-generation Nevadan, started life on her family's Flying Flapjack Ranch in Lovelock and rural Nevada has shaped the values she holds today. She is a lifelong teacher and educator, and has a reputation as a problem solver and independent thinker. Derby is running for Congress because she's fed up with career politicians who put themselves and their party ahead of what's right for the country. Her campaign is focused on living up to the promises made to veterans, ensuring a secure nation, a sensible energy plan, affordable prescription drugs, accessible health care, and a fiscally responsible government that is focused on the needs of the people and not the special interests.
